James S. Tweddell, MD

I am currently Professor of Surgery at the University of Cincinnati and Chief of Surgery and Executive Co-Director of the Heart Institute at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Before coming to Cincinnati I was Chair of the Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and the Medical College of Wisconsin.

My clinical and research focus on the following areas:

  1. The care of the neonate and infant before, during and after complex congenital heart surgery. Working for 2 decades with my colleagues at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and more recently in Cincinnati we have strived to develop reliable and reproducible evidence based perioperative management strategies to improve survival and developmental outcomes. Our work has included the use of novel monitoring techniques such as continuous venous oximetry and near infrared spectroscopy. We developed a home monitoring program to limit mortality of these same high-risk infants during the early months of life and this program is now widely adopted across the country.
  2. With my colleagues we have established a multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary group studying bleeding and antithrombotic strategies among pediatric cardiac surgical patients with a special focus on neonates and patients requiring mechanical circulatory support. This research group includes research and clinical hematologists, anesthesiologists, critical care specialists and heart surgeons.
