Online Neofest 2023: Neonatal Care at the Extreme of Viability

With advances in technology and refinement of neonatal care strategies, significant improvement has been realized at the limits of viability. Based on current evidence and experience, programs of highly focused, active care for infants born at less than 24 weeks’ gestation have been developed over the past decade, and the result has been improved survival and reduced morbidity. Please join us in reviewing the specialized support strategies, improved outcomes, ethical considerations, and parenteral perspectives related to the care of this complex and delicate population.

1. Reflect on ethical considerations, both individual and societal, that impact the team's decision-making when considering resuscitation of infants at the cusp of viability.
2. Illustrate the recent improvements in survival and morbidity realized with adoption of active, specialized management strategies specific to infants <24 weeks’ gestation.
3. Summarize the unique approaches required to support physiological differences and address common challenges unique to the management of the extremely preterm infant <24 weeks’ gestational age.
4. Reflect on parental perspectives and experiences that influence parental decision-making, engagement, and reassurance in the NICU and beyond.

In support of improving patient care, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. CME:  Cincinnati Children’s designates this live activity for a maximum of 3.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. 

Nurse:  This activity is approved for a maximum 3.75 continuing nursing education (CNE) 
contact hours.

MOC:  Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the activity and individual assessment of and feedback to the learner, enables the learner to earn up to 3.75 MOC points in the American Board of Pediatrics’ (ABP) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit learner completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABP MOC credit. Cincinnati Children’s uploads MOC Part 2 points to the ABP quarterly, upon learners successfully completing the outlined MOC Part 2 requirements for an activity.
