Overview
Childhood obesity continues to be the most common childhood and adolescent problem in the Cincinnati area.  The AAP now recommends that community practitioners take a more aggressive approach to treatment which includes lifestyle management, using anti-obesity medications, and referring to bariatric programs. With this in mind, our 4-hour teaching conference will help community practitioners develop the skill set to offer this advanced obesity care from the office setting.   The conference will feature short didactic sessions that address the medical treatment of obesity, its co-morbidities, and lifestyle management by CCHMC experts.   Additionally, there will be small group sessions in individual cases and needs will be addressed.  Please come with cases from your practice to discuss!

Objectives
  1. Implement evidence-based strategies for evaluating and treating childhood obesity and its comorbidities in primary care settings.
  2. Confidently prescribe and monitor anti-obesity medications when indicated, understanding their mechanisms, benefits, and potential side effects.
  3. Identify appropriate candidates for bariatric surgery referral based on current guidelines and best practices.
  4. Apply a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to childhood obesity management, addressing both medical and psychosocial aspects of care.
  5. Utilize effective communication strategies to discuss weight management with patients and families, promoting engagement and adherence to treatment plans.
