Depression is common in children and adolescents; however, identification and treatment can be complex. Our Depression ECHO provides an efficient way to learn and practice, supported by psychiatry, psychology, and primary care provider peers. The goal is to improve the primary care provider's comfort when managing treatment of depression and provide a network of resources to ensure patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

Depression ECHO

Target Audience: This course has been designed for physicians, advanced practice nurses, and physician assistants.

Session Topics:

  • Addressing New Onset Depression

  • Evidence-Based Interventions

  • Initiating 1st Line Medication

  • Ongoing Medical Monitoring (the follow-up visit)

Why should I participate?

Primary Care Providers (PCP) can access pediatric specialists for professional collaboration through regular teleECHO sessions, which are like an interactive grand rounds presentation. During a session, the specialist will present a brief didactic. PCPs present cases to the "learning network," which includes the specialist team and other participants, to receive feedback.

Featured Faculty:

Emily Harris, MD, MPH, FAAP

Dr. Harris is an assistant professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at CCHMC. She is board certified in adult psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. She is an outpatient clinical psychiatrist within the Neurobehavioral Continuum, primarily serving children, adolescents, and young adults with developmental disabilities.

Kate Barnes, LISW-S
Kate is a Licensed Independent Social Worker in the in the Division of Behavioral Medicine and Clinical Psychology at Cincinnati Children’s. She provides direct clinical care in Integrated Behavioral Health at West Side Pediatrics. She currently works with children, adolescents and families from birth to 20 years old. Kate has presented on a wide range of mental health topics such as Trauma Informed Care, Mental and Behavioral Health, Cultural Competency, Group Development and Management, and Early Childhood Interventions.

What is “Common to Complex”?

“From Common to Complex: Utilizing Telehealth to Connect Primary Care Providers to Pediatric Specialists” is a project looking at using technology and case-based learning to improve knowledge, self-efficacy, and patient care. Cincinnati Children’s uses the Project ECHO methodology to offer telehealth-based learning for primary care providers, especially in rural or underserved areas.

How Project ECHO Works

Project ECHO – Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes – bridges the gap between healthcare specialists and community-based clinicians. The model is based on four principles:

  • Use technology to leverage scarce resources

  • Share “best practices” to reduce disparities

  • Apply case-based learning to master complexity

  • Evaluate and monitor outcomes

During Project ECHO sessions, a learner from the community shares a de-identified case challenge or case concept based on their real-world experience. A brief overview of the case is shared during the ECHO session, followed by clarifying questions and a collaborative discussion. Together, the group provides recommendations, shares best practices, and offers guidance rooted in collective expertise and evidence-informed approaches.

  2. Utilize best evidence/treatment algorithms to identify treatment options
  3. Describe the referral pathway of pediatric diagnoses if not treatable in the community setting
  4. Discuss roles/responsibilities for the healthcare team when treating and referring
  5. Communicate with the healthcare team

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

CME: Cincinnati Children’s designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ per session. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

CNE: This activity is approved for a maximum 1.25 continuing nursing education (CNE) contact hours per session.

Physician Assistants: Cincinnati Children’s has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 1.25 AAPA Category 1 CME credits per session. Approval is valid until 10/16/2025 . PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.

APB MOC Part 2: Successful completion of this CME activity enables the participant to earn 1.25 MOC Part 2 points per session in the American Board of Pediatrics’ (ABP) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABP MOC credit.
